The upper part of the monument depicts Christ. To the right and left are figures representing rural society at that time: the family, faith, and work in the fields. In the lower part, a deceased soldier lies in a narrow coffin beneath the ground. His head is bent upwards in an unnatural position, as if he were still alive, even though he can no longer move.
Bas-relief ‘Saviour on the Cross, with a soldier and relatives beside him, and a soldier in the grave below’
The depiction is typical of the Middle Ages: Christ is the most important figure and is shown larger than the others, who have found peace and contemplation beneath his protective arms and have accepted the fate of war.
