A “Courtyard of Honour” staged like a stage, accessed via steps through a U-shaped walled enclosure, featuring six martial statues of soldiers keeping vigil over a soldier laid out in the centre before a cross relief inscribed on one of the walls; created in 1935 by the sculptor Erwin Krumm. Plaques embedded in the wall bearing the names of those killed in both world wars, with those from the Second World War added in 1952. POL-FR: Waldkirch: Graffiti on war memorial
As reported to the police on 4 March 2020, as yet unknown perpetrators sprayed various slogans on the war memorial in Waldkirch-Kollnau. It is not yet known when the act was committed. However, given the monument’s prominent location and the extensive nature of the graffiti, the offence is unlikely to have gone undetected for very long. The incident may be linked to similar acts of vandalism at the so-called ‘Heroes’ Cross’ in Waldkirch. The police have launched an investigation and are asking any witnesses who can provide relevant information to come forward.
