The war memorial in Mittelzell was unveiled in April 1939, just a few months before the outbreak of the Second World War. The monument is remarkable not only because of the date, but also because it depicts a woman holding a torch, striding resolutely ahead of a soldier.
“The spirit of war turned to stone – commemorate its victims, you who are still alive.”
The genius of war, who shows the warrior the way, strides westwards. The new Wehrmacht was intended to avenge Germany’s military defeat in 1918. Just a few months later, this war was unleashed. Secondly, the striking location in front of the cathedral symbolises the National Socialists’ struggle against the Catholic Church, which was to be waged with all their might once the war had been won.
