The war memorial in Murg is in a central location on Bürgerplatz (in the western part of the “Murger Mitte”).

Until that day, the pedestal of the monument’s two figures had been repeatedly and fiercely shaken over many years, at least in people’s minds. Many would have preferred to remove the sculpture by the sculptor Hugo Knittel, which had been unveiled in the school playground in 1938 as a memorial to the fallen sons of Murgen. The highly emotional discussions centred on the aesthetics of the group of figures. The warlike depiction was anachronistic and unsuitable for a school playground, according to the critics. Those who advocated for its preservation, for their part, emphasised its commemorative value and wanted the monument to be understood as a symbol of peace and a memorial: “What once was shall never be again.” (Brigitte Chymo, www.suedkurier.de, 14 November 2025)
